Programme note
The title of the work is derived from Mozart’s opera, “Die Zauberflöte”, since themes from this opera are used as its basis.
In the work percussion instruments, especially keyboard types such as the marimba and xylophone, play an important role.
There are three movements:
The first movement comprises several dimensions of one theme - it is an allergory on Pamina’s aria “Ach ich fühl’s, es ist verschwunden”, and unfolds as a series of flights of fancy.
The second movement comprises one dimension of several themes - against the background of an everlasting movement, a number of themes from the opera become intertwined. It is in this movement that I have tried to convey my personal African perspective.
In my opinion, this tribute to Mozart would only make sense if the work ends with an arrangement of one of my favourite duets, “Bei Männern, welche Liebe fühlen”.
Review
Roosenschoon employs full orchestral forces, including a battery of percussion and organ, in assured fashion and achieves moments of insightful effectiveness and marvelous orchestral colours
