Ikonografie

Programme note

PIcThe work reflects different aspects of abstract images and is an example of the composer’s fascination with sonorities and textures.  It also explores the quotation of well-known musical material, placing it in a different context and thus giving it new meaning.

There are three movements:  The first, Skadubeeld (Silhouette), focuses on linear contours and a variety of textures.  The second, Illusie (Illusion), is characterised by nebulous soundblocks.  Multi-polyphonic movement is created by individual lines which enter and break off at different points.  The final movement, Kinetika (Kinetics), is rhythmic and energetic.  Apart from persistent ostinato patterns, sections from the previous movements re-appear.  But the main feature is a quotation from Bach’s St. Matthew Passion which, like an iconoclastic apparition, concludes the work.

Ikonografie, was chosen for the 1992 "World Music Days" of the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) in Warsaw, Poland where it was performed on 15 May 1992 by the Warsaw National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Stanislaw Skrowaczewski.

Review

All the works Roosenschoon has completed so far reveal an obvious, abundant, and versatile compositional ability. With a style that seems fairly pic2well established, radical changes in direction seem unlikely, although his youth and openness to new ideas may prove otherwise. Although the composer has written little over the past two years, his contribution to South African music has been, and doubtless will continue to be, significant in standard, originality, and sheer professionalism.
